Box stringers were fabricated in small sections to fit in the elevator and field welded in place with CJPs. Stair treads were bent plate pans supported by steel angles. Also incorporated into the Stair design were custom vertical steel posts 3 1/2” x 1 1/4” thick solid bar material. The project included approximately 100 linear feet of glass balcony guardrail, with steel top cap and steel handrail. All steel components required a finish paint by others. The owner and architect were very pleased with the quality of the final product.

Keeping the Flow

Is this a joint venture: No
Category: Stairs Complete - Commercial
Designed by: Fabricator/Architect Jointly
Total Labor Hours: 3390
Finish Type: Non directional on brass with clear coat. Faux Corten on steel inner stringer.
Materials Used: Steel and Brass
General Description: The impressive spiral stair connects two levels with a vertical rise of 15' 2". The Architect gave us a conceptual design which showed the perforated brass panels as having a 'floating' effect on the stair. To achieve this, we engineered a low-profile post system with hidden fasteners. The result is the curved and perforated brass panels gracefully wrap the stair with no visible fasteners or welds. Given the vertical rise is over 12' this necessitated a mid-landing. We were able to incorporate this while still maintaining the graceful flow of the brass panels, i.e., there are no visible steps in the guard panels when the spiral is viewed from the exterior. The interior stringer was spiral cut from a 1” thick steel pipe then faux finished to give the appearance of being Corten weathering steel.

Vault Entry Stair

Is this a joint venture: No
Category: Stairs Complete - Commercial
Designed by: Architect
Total Labor Hours: 6548
Finish Type: Tinted lacquer and blackened steel by GJ Nikolas Lacquers
Materials Used: A572 plate, HSS, sheet, low iron glass
General Description: This feature staircase has a unique industrial design and is the lobby's centerpiece. The stair features one stringer that is concealed by the wall. The standout elements are the ½” thick structural vertical fins attached to the ceiling, which support each tread while seamlessly integrating the handrail through precision notching. This staircase was constructed mostly on-site in a tight, fully operational building, adding to its complexity. The true challenge was achieving a flawless finish: tinted lacquer and blackened steel surfaces required meticulous care to avoid scratches, ensuring every detail met the highest standards. This piece demonstrates innovation and craftsmanship, making it a true showstopper.
