BARRACKS RAILING

Is this a joint venture: No
Category: Exterior Railings & Fences - Nonforged
Designed by: Architect
Total Labor Hours: 580
Finish Type: powder coat
Materials Used: steel, salvaged wrought iron

General Description: This project originally started as a restoration job when the staircase outside of this old army barracks was being rebuilt. The combination of the original guard rail being badly damaged during removal and the new staircase being built to slightly different dimensions caused the project to become a new fabrication. Some small adjustments were made to bring the new piece up to code including height, baluster spacing, and anchoring, while preserving as much as possible of the historic character of the work. Threaded tenons were replaced with TIG welds to avoid water infiltration issues but everything else was constructed to match the original. Thirty feet of decorative molding was salvaged from the original cap rail and another fifty feet of new molding was forged to match. The connections between the railing panels and all of the decorative work is assembled with bevel head screws in the same manner as the original.
